Contest with commitment

Iris Maju, who won the Mrs India Planet runner-up title, speaks of her commitment to create a greener planet

For a woman, life does not end when she gets married and has children. In fact, life can open wider vistas for her to explore. Iris Maju, a resident of Pune, is married to Maju, a Colonel in the Army and has a son, but that has not stopped her from winning the Mrs India Planet runner-up title. Iris also added another feather to her cap when she was selected the Community Ambassador for Asia International.

This National level contest for married women had over 300 entries filtered down to the final 34 contestants. Iris states that this contest was not only about glamour but looked for a woman of substance who was also working for a social cause.

Iris mentions, “I am into environmental activities and have been promoting and supporting issues concerning the environment for a long time. This title and platform will help me further the cause.” Iris will be involved in more such environmental and community issues in her capacity as the Ambassador for Asia International for the next one year. Incidentally,

Iris also won the title of Mrs Finesse at the contest and stands a chance of going to Malaysia or Bulgaria to represent India.

As the wife of an Army man, Iris has been travelling all over India. Both Maju and Iris are from Kochi. It was her desire to do something for the environment that prompted her to enter the contest.

Like other beauty contests there was a ramp walk but that was just a small part of the contest. The contestants were given a topic and had to talk on the topic and identify projects to do. Iris plans to do work that will create a better environment. She adds, “I have contacted an environmentalist and am discussing specific plans that I want to implement.” Her husband has been very encouraging and a strong pillar of strength.
