A mama behind the baby doll

Kanika Kapoor was in town for a show this weekend. We caught up with her
For Kanika Kapoor who has been ruling all Bollywood’s music charts, it wasn’t just pure destiny that made her a success overnight. The young, pretty and petite singer who was in Bengaluru on Saturday, believes that it was also a lot of hardwork. “Music was meant to come back to me. I manifested 12 years of life working hard to train in classical music. I really wanted to sing after learning for so long.”
It was Jugni ji that made her an instant hit and then there was no looking back with hit songs like Lovely, Baby Doll, Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan and Chil Gaye Naina. Talking of her first tryst with the sur and taal, she says, “I started training in classical music from Pandit Ganesh Prasad Mishra from Varanasi. I was six and living in Lucknow then, but looked at it seriously when I turned nine and performed for my school, Loreto Convent. Anup Jalota was a family friend and helped in grooming me. I also did an acting course from the Kishore Namit Kapoor School in Mumbai, but then I got married to a doctor and moved to London. By the age of 25 I had already had three kids who are now 12, 10 and 8. I was a hands-on mom and did everything that a mother would for her family.”
Although things didn’t work well in her marriage, the single mom admits, “I always wanted to sing, but I was going with the flow. I’m still good friends with my ex-husband. When I decided to come back into the studio and made jugni ji, I didn’t know it would become a hit. After that I was offered to fly down from London and sing Baby Doll. I flew down to record Baby Doll for three days and went back to London. I sang Chittiyaan kaliyan and Chil Gaye Naina after that. I’ve been performing at music concerts and music awards. Last three days I was in three different cities, Pune, Dubai and Bengaluru. I won an award at the AIBA awards in Dubai for best female playback singer last week. It was the first time Edward Maya mixed my songs and we performed together at the MTV Royal Stag Bollyland at White Orchid in Bengaluru. The response was magical. I’m now getting into recordings and then going to perform at IIFA on June 5 which will be a mash up of my own songs. I’ve started composing as well and working on my singles.”
She’s on a roller coaster ride, as she reveals, “I’ve signed up for 22 songs for some of the top banners in the coming months. I’m singing for Abhishek-Sonakshi starrer All is Well, Love letter for The Legend of Michael Mishra and Kapil Sharma’s Abbas Mastan film, besides Me and Charles, two Balaji productions and some Sufi music.”
In the midst of all the work, how will she plan to do the balancing act with her kids, we wonder and she effuses, “My kids live in London and I’m travelling between London and Mumbai every month. I spend time with them and soon they will be going to a boarding school there. My brother also lives in London and my parents come and go.” Getting candid on her other habits, she signs off adding, “Although I’m not able to get enough sleep with the recordings and performances, I’m also working on starting my own fashion label by September this year. I also love to dance and am learning a bit of it now. I’m a fun chilled out person, in fact my friends call me a joker. I’ve made some good friends from the industry.”
