Styling Mr Quirky
Ranveer Singh is always in the headlines, if not for his movies and antics off set, then for his fashion statements. From quirky to bizarre, the actor’s style has always been noticed. And his stylist Nitasha Gaurav, who has been working with him for over three years, says it’s all about the actor’s personality. “He’s flamboyant and full of energy. He’s smart and is clued into music, sports and more. And the best part is that he is up for experimenting,” she says, adding, “He’s a trendsetter, he’s not one to follow the herd.”
Asked whether she often hears that Ranveer’s look was just bizarre, Nitasha says with a laugh, “All the time. A day doesn’t go by when people don’t speak about his look. But that’s the thing, people only remember his experimental looks. Ranveer wears t-shirt and jeans or classic suits all the time, but that isn’t spoken about. He likes to try something that’s invariably different and not in everyone’s comfort zone.”
And like most celebrities, the style is not only Ranveer’s. Having worked together for three years now, Nitasha and Ranveer have collaborated together to build Ranveer’s style.
“Styling is a two-way traffic. It’s not just his taste but ‘our’ taste,” she says.
Nitasha has also styled Arjun Kapoor, Ayushmann Khurrana, Siddharth Malhotra, Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra and Sonakshi Sinha. All of them are “new” kids on the block, and asked how she creates a different style for each, she says, “Each of them has very different personalities. Varun Dhawan has a very young, college-going personality while Siddharth’s the more serious one. When we put looks together, we know that it has to reflect their personality.”
Being in the fashion industry seems a glamorous career, but Nitasha says it’s just the tip of the iceberg. “There’s a lot of hard work that goes behind the scenes. Yes, as part of my job I get to travel a lot but the truth is it’s not a vacation for us. Even now, while we are at IIFA, I won’t be free for a minute as Ranveer, Arjun and Ayushmann are all hosting. So I have to accompany them to rehearsals as well.”
