Standoff at Maharaja’s College enters third week
KOCHI: The strike at Maharaja’s College against granting of autonomy to the college is entering third week with the functioning of the college remaining paralysed, however the authorities including the collector has shown no inclination to call the striking teachers and students for talks in a bid to break the impasse.
Kishore K.V., Maharaja’s College unit secretary of KSU, said that the collector M.G. Rajamanickam took the initiative to hold talks with the strikers for conducting the ongoing UPSC exams at the college. “It is strange he is not initiating discussions for opening the college,” said Kishore. Meanwhile teachers belonging to AKGCT who are on strike said that they will take classes separately to compensate for the loss caused to the students on account of the strike.
The strike has resulted in hitting the future of a vast majority of non-political students at the college who don’t know where to turn to for a solution. University exams of PG students are round the corner and they are unsure whether they will be able to write the exams.
“The internal exams of the PG students have not taken place. The university exam of the students who got admission in the old scheme before the college attained autonomy is to take place from June 19, but it is to be seen how it will take place in the light of the current turmoil,” said Mr Kishore.
He said that in the wake of the strike the practical exams of third and fourth semester BSc students were postponed while the same was held in other colleges under MG University.
“Several students who passed degree courses are yet to get their TC from the college so as to secure admission for PG courses in other universities,” said K Sethuraj, another KSU leader.
Mr Kishore also added that scholarship distribution and other work has been hit.
