North Karnataka wants full Belagavi session
Belagavi: Amid ongoing protests by sugarcane farmers in north Karnataka, several leaders have demanded the government hold the entire session beginning here on June 29 in this border city instead of restricting it to ten days.
According to leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Jagadish Shettar, instead of holding sessions for short duration in Belagavi, the government should extend the session for 20 days this time so that problems plaguing the region could be discussed and resolved.
At a meeting of leaders held in Belagavi ahead of the session, former mayor Siddangouda Patil said, most of the sessions of legislature were conducted in Belgavi so far merely as a formality without any objective.
In order to make the forthcoming session effective, the government should hold it without splitting and come up with effective measures for overall development of north Karnataka. A high-power committee comprising ministers, MPs and legislators should be constituted to gather suggestions on how to make best use of Suvarna Vidhana Soudha round the year, said Mr Patil.
Several leaders charged that the government had not bothered to address the problems of sugarcane growers despite the suicide of Vittal Arabhavi in front of Suvarna in 2013.
