Almatti and Tungabhadra Dams in Karnataka have started receiving their first flood

Hyderabad: For the first time in the present monsoon season, as well as in June, both Almatti and Tungabhadra Dams in Karnataka have started receiving their first flood raising hopes in Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh which are heavily dependent for most of its irrigation projects based on Krishna River.
Heavy rains in the upstream catchment areas of both River Krishna and Tungabhadra, Almatti and TB Dam near Hospet led to inflows in the order of 63, 150 and 12,508 cusecs respectively during the last 24 hours.
However there is still a flood cushion of about 109 TMC ft at Almatti, and 93 TMC ft at Tungabhadra Dam as water levels at both major reservoirs have reached dead storage. This means water will not be let off downstream unless there is going to be comfortable storage at the reservoirs.
However Central Water Commission sources said, it is likely there will be more rains in the Malnad, Karavali, and upper Krishna areas in Karnataka due to active monsoon on account of disturbances in the Arabian Sea.
The inflows into major reservoirs in Karnataka state is likely to continue for some more days. Meanwhile, Srisailam, NS Dam and Jurala registered zero inflows. Same is the situation in Godavari River basin projects like Sriram Sagar, Singur, Nizam Sagar, Lower Manair Dam in Telangana State and Jaikwadi in Maharashtra.
