Karnataka: Moved by elephant’s death, villagers build memorial
HASSAN: In memory of a wild elephant which died due to electrocution at a village in Alur taluk of Hassan is likely to get a memorial at its burial site. Interestingly, the memorial is planned in a region which regularly witnesses human-animal conflict especially elephants.
A tusker aged around 26 year died after coming into contact with a live wire at Kadluroo Kudige Koppalu village of Alur taluk on June 13 and villagers were pained at the death of elephant which was sighted frequently at their village moving in agricultural fields and estates but never harmed anyone of them.
Yet to come to the terms on the death of the elephant, Mohan, a resident of the village, told Deccan Chronicle on Tuesday that “Plans are there to construct a memorial for the elephant which was living amongst us for years and his sudden demise has been a huge loss for me since the carcass of the jumbo was found on the border of his fields.”
Mohan added “The memorial could be an engraved stone or installing an idol of Lord Ganesha or a life size statue of an elephant so that every passers-by comes to know that villagers were fond of the elephant and the way it died.”
Though, a few elephants have met the similar fate to that of the Tusker in Alur but none of the villagers were afflicted by pain in the past. On Monday, some villagers assembled together and performed 11th day ritual for the dead elephant at its burial site and were served food on the occasion after performing puja. Mohan on the ritual said, “Let elephant be born again and live in our vicinity.”
