Smoking could increase the risk of Type 2 Diabetes by up to four times, while migration could have a protective effect against it, a new statistical study has shown.
Hyderabad: Smoking could increase the risk of Type 2 Diabetes by up to four times, while migration could have a protective effect against it, a new statistical study has shown. Scientists found two genes playing a predominant role in the manifestation of the disease while three other genes were found to be interacting with environmental factors like smoking, drinking and Body Mass Index.
Environmental factors are often seen as triggers causing the manifestation of the disease. Scientists from the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) Hyderabad studied genetic interaction with environmental factors and the manifestation of Type 2 Diabetes in Hyderabad populations. The elaborate study was carried out by Dr B. Mohan Reddy, Professor, and Dr K. Uma Jyothi, Senior Research Fellow at the Biological Anthropology Unit of the ISI Hyderabad.
Researchers collected information from a sample of 1,379 persons in Hyderabad of whom 759 were diabetics. Scientists also collected information from the subjects about their food, smoking, drinking habits as well as the migration pattern.
Nine genes known to be associated with the manifestation of the disease were primarily studied for their role in the manifestation of the Type 2 Diabetes.“Overall, of the nine genes considered for our study TCF7L2 and CDKAL1 emerged as prominent and showed significant association with T2DM in the population of Hyderabad,“ the scientists said based on their research.
