Enjoying her new avatar: Saparna
Saparna is hyperactive, chatty and is the darling of everyone on the set of Mayamohini, the new serial that has started airing on Mazhavil Manorama, in which she appears both as a male and a female. The serial directed by Prasad Nooranad is aired at 9.30 pm.
Saparna says that Mayamohini is one of her most challenging appearances so far. “I love challenges. This is my second Malayalam serial. Four years back, I had done a small character in Harichandanam. When I got the offer to act in Mayamohini, I was actually busy with Tamil serials.”
“But, the subject of Mayamohini was so exciting that I took it up,” says Saparna, a popular face in Tamil and Telugu serials, who considers Mayamohini as a path-breaking choice in her career.
The first schedule of the serial is still continuing in Thiruvananthapuram. According to Saparna, the transformation to a male character wasn’t so difficult. “I only had to be vigilant about the appearance, especially covering up my body perfectly to look like a man,” she chuckles. “But, when I came in the set as Unnikrishnan, everybody said I looked perfect. All my fellow female actors have started teasing me saying unni unni umma umma. From the peer responses I got after the first episode, it was obvious that the appearance worked well,” says Saparna.
Hailing from Coimbatore, she is gradually learning Malayalam. “I had learnt a little bit of the language while doing Harichandanam. Though I am not fluent in Malayalam, I can understand it well. But, nothing could stop me from talking on the sets. Because I love talking,” giggles Saparna, who got into media quite by accident. She used to host shows for local channels in Coimbatore and that led her to Chennai, where she started her television career as an anchor.
“It was a music show. Later, I started doing serials and small roles in movies,” she says. But, the growth wasn’t easy. She had to face rejections and disappointments. “It was seven years ago during my first serial. I did not know much acting then. After a few days of shoot, the director sent me away saying that my acting was bad. That was a tough period. But, I took that in the right spirit and continued in my stride,” says Saparna, who later acted with popular actress Radhika in Arasi.
And, now, she is choosy. “Till now, I have done whatever that has come to my hand. Now, I have decided to do only interesting roles. Mayamohini gave me that opportunity,” she sums up.
