SECC 2011: Only 7.36 lakh of Karnataka’s rural households pay taxes

Bengaluru: The first-ever Socio Economic and Caste Census (Rural) 2011 findings, which were released on Friday by the union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, has shed light on some interesting facts about Karnataka. According to the report, only 7.36 lakh households in rural Karnataka pay any kind of tax to the government, even though 61.22 per cent of households are concentrated in the rural areas.

For the first time, the census has shed light on various important socio economic factors related to rural Karnataka. As per the findings, even after rapid urbanisation, only 38.74 per cent households are now in the cities.

As per the census, around 77.38 per cent households in rural Karnataka are connected with mobiles. In rural Karnataka, there were 2,716 transgenders. Widowed (18,32,348), separated (1,82,379) and 25,381people are divorced in the state.

Majority of the families are male, the total number of women who head households are just 18.57 per cent. Even though caste-wise details regarding Other Backward Classes and Upper castes are not made public, as per the census 18.06 per cent of the house holds in the Rural Karnataka belong to Scheduled Castes while 8.28 per cent belong to Scheduled Tribes. 95,612 households have informed that they are either adivasis or they have no caste identity.
