Coimbatore: Fake DIG runs out of luck, arrested
Police are in the process of collecting information on those who lost their money to the fake DIG
Coimbatore: The city police arrested a fake cop, who under the guise of a deputy inspector general (DIG), extorted money from commercial establishments and businessmen. Police said the accused, G. Shanmugham Durai, 49, from Madurai who is invested in the granite business, had sought police personnel as escort to visit a jewel making shop. He was accompanied by a divorcee Meena Kumari, 50, who he claimed to be his wife.
They had come down to Coimbatore from Chennai on Saturday and stayed in a posh hotel on Avinashi road. “Impersonating himself as a former DIG, Shanmugham sought police escort from the Saravanampatty station. Trusting him, a sub-inspector and two constables were sent from the station as escorts,” police said.
The fake DIG and his live-in partner had gone to a jewellery shop in Gandhipuram and tried to extort money from the owner. On suspicion, the police took him back to the station and enquiries revealed that he was a fake cop.
Police suspect that posing as a retired DIG, Shanmugham had fooled cops and extorted money from commercial establishments and business people following the same modus operandi across Tamil Nadu.
Police are in the process of collecting information on those who lost their money to the fake DIG. It appears he has been cheating people like this over the last two years. “As he had a well built physique with a long moustache, many believed him to be a cop and lost their money,” police said.
The Saravanampatty police have registered a case under IPC section 120b (criminal conspiracy), 170 (impersonating a public servant), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 419 (punishment for cheating by impersonation). Further investigations are on.
