Ooty: Forest officials and wildlife rescue teams have successfully trapped a leopard and shifted it to this hill town for treatment. The animal was found limping around the farmland at Kanneri hamlet near here.
The villagers spotted the leopard limping near the farmlands at Kannerihada area. Having initially panicked at the sight of the leopard, the villagers informed the forest officials on seeing its condition and its inability to walk.
The foresters and members of the Wildlife and Nature Conservation Trust(WNCT) rushed to the area and observed the carnivore. Sadiq Ali, Founder of WNCT and a well-known name in wildlife rescue activities said the leopard's hind limbs were weak and had lost its ability to move normally.
Having decided to capture the leopard and shift it to Ooty for treatment, forest veterinary team and other officials trapped it using a ketch-pole and net. The animal was then taken to the Armby forest guest house in Ooty on Sunday evening, he said.
The leopard is a three-year-old male, said E. Vijayaraghavan, forest veterinary surgeon. There are no significant external injuries in the limbs. The leopard is suffering from a kind of neuro-muscular disorder that hinders the movement of its hind legs, he said adding that treatment has begun and the animal will be under observation.
