Kochi Cancer centre ‘rests’ on stone

No progress from stone laid on August 18, 2014

Kochi: With just a month to go for the first “anniversary” of laying the foundation stone for the Kochi cancer centre, no work has progressed with the result that people in the district are seething and are in agitation-mode regarding the empty promise made by the Chief Minister and other people’s representatives that the centre would be realized in 24 months.

It was included among the Mission 676 projects of the State Government so that it would be up and running before the end of the tenure of the Oommen Chandy Government.

The Justice V R Krishna Iyer Movement which is spearheading the agitation has now asked the Chief Minister to convene a meeting of the Ministers connected with the project, Ernakulam District Co-operative Bank president N P Paulose who has shown the willingness to provide funding for the project, special officer of the project Dr V P Gangadharan and the consultant of the project Hospital Service Consultancy Corporation chairman.

“The chief minister had given an assurance to movement leaders that a senior IAS officer would be appointed to co-ordinate the activities related to the project on the model of the Kochi Metro Rail and CIAL projects. But nothing has happened so far,” said Dr N K Sanil Kumar, a member of the Justice Krishna Iyer Movement.

Dr Sanil Kumar said that the state government was ignoring Dr Gangadharan who has been appointed the special officer of the project. “He was appointed without even being given an opportunity to hold a telephonic discussion on the project. He has already expressed his lack of interest in the annuity model which the government is pushing for the project,” said Sanil Kumar.
