Medical education most costly in Telangana
Hyderabad: The cost of medical education in Andhra Pradesh is among the lowest countrywide, while it is the most expensive in Telangana, according to a National Sample Survey Office report. In fact, the expenditure of each medical student in TS was almost double that of AP.
The cost of engineering, management and other technical education was found to be higher in TS than in the neighbouring state, tough not by much.
The Union ministry of statistics and programme implementation had recently released the report on key indicators of social consumption in education.
The report put the average cost of medical education in government colleges in AP at Rs 44,000, against Rs 74,000 in Telangana. In private colleges it was Rs 1.4 lakh in TS and Rs 82,000 in AP.
Dr G. Bhaskar Rao, chairman, All India Private Medical Colleges Association, said, “Almost 20 years back, a parliamentary body had suggested that the fee structure should be Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4 lakh per annum. This year the fees has been slashed in AP from Rs 60,000. Nowhere in the world is such a fee structure found.”
As per the report, medical education is cheaper only in Karnataka, Rajasthan and some UTs.
Study in a private engineering college in AP cost about Rs 52,000 against Rs 46,000 in Telangana. The report said law education in AP private law colleges cost Rs 36,000 per annum while it was Rs 48,000 in TS.
Management study in private colleges in TS was dearer Rs 61,000 against Rs 36,000 in AP colleges, as per the report. But expenditure in government law colleges in AP, at about Rs 33,000, was found to be almost twice that in TS government-run law colleges.
