New Delhi: In an important move that will boost air safety in the aviation sector, the government is expected to operationalise by next week all aspects of GPS-Aided Geo-Augmented Navigation (Gagan), a satellite-based navigation system (SBNS) designed to “provide the instantaneous position of aircraft, velocity and time information anywhere on the globe”, civil aviation ministry sources indicated on Saturday.
Gagan will ensure enhanced air safety and benefit the aviation sector through direct routes and increased fuel savings, leading to improved efficiency and economy for airlines, reduced workload of flight crew and air traffic control officers, improved capacity etc.
Pilots will also be able to know their exact location vis-a-vis other aircraft even in the event of failure of communication devices. This will lead to monitoring of aircraft in all phases of flight. Monitoring of Indian airspace will also improve, said a source.
“Gagan is a planned implementation of a satellite-based navigation system, developed by the Airports Authority of India and the Indian Space Research Organisation, to deploy and certify an operational SBAS for the Indian Flight Information Region, with expansion capability to neighbouring Flight Information Regions,” a ministry official said.
When commissioned for service, Gagan is expected to provide a civil aeronautical navigation signal consistent with International Civil Aviation Organisation Standards.
