He said the system has to be made foolproof to ensure that influential people don’t tamper with it and topple the democratic process

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: LDF convener Vaikom Viswan has said that Election Commission should take immediate steps to ensure that all technical issues related to online voting are resolved well before the notification of local bodies poll.

He said the system has to be made foolproof to ensure that influential people don’t tamper with it and topple the democratic process.

“We are not against online voting. But the government and other agencies should deal with the issue seriously. All technical checks need to be carried out and completed well before the poll process gets started,” he said.

Cabinet on Wednesday had recommended to the State Election Commission to introduce online voting for NRK voters during the local bodies’ poll scheduled to be held in October.

According to state election commission the number of NRK electorate is between 15 to 20 lakh while the total electorate at the moment is 2.40 crore which could go up to 2.50 crore.
