Bollywood’s dark horse Nawazuddin believes that everyone gets an opportunity to prove themselves

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is soaking in the compliments for his splendid role as Pakistani journalist Chand Nawab in Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The actor, who comes from a small town in Haryana says that he maybe a star in Mumbai, but back home, people express their admiration differently.
“I come from a village in Haryana, in the Budhana district. We mainly have Jats there who are very rough with their language and behaviour, but usi mein unka pyaar hota hai. When I visit, they come to meet me and ask me to click photos with them. They believe it is their right that I click photos with them. There is no theatre in the village, so people travel in a tonga to the city which is about 40 km away just to watch my films,” he says.
This actor’s ethos lies in inspiring the youth. “The youth is hungry for icons who they can look up to. See our PM Narendra Modi, for example. People got interested when they found out that he started off as a chai walla. You need to inspire the youth to be successful today. It is the youth who make us actors into stars. And since I come from a small village myself, I would like to portray such rags to riches characters on screen.”
Nawaz is not the only talented one in the family. His brother Shamas has also made a film which has been well appreciated globally. “His film Miyan Kal Aana has been doing the rounds of film festivals all over the world. I had produced the film. At the moment, he is writing a script, but I leave the casting to him. I won’t pressurise him to cast me,” says the actor, who is now working on one more film with another Khan. The film is titled Raees where he shares the screen with Shah Rukh Khan.
Speaking of his role, Nawaz says, “SRK and I have a lot of scenes together. I play a cop in the film, it’s a positive role. We begin shooting in the second schedule in October.” As an actor, one should grab every opportunity they get, believes Nawaz. “Everybody gets an opportunity to prove themselves, it’s only about recognising it. I believe everyone should prepare themselves for that one opportunity, whether it comes after 10 or 50 years, Even a one-scene role can change your life.” And one has to face competition from star kids too, we point out. “Yes, star kids get a break easily, but they too have to struggle to sustain success. Salman Khan may have got one film on Salim saab’s recommendation but maintaining that position so long is tough.”
