Gurdaspur attack: Terrorists used advanced weapons; Chinese grenades, says Punjab DGP

‘They were in combat uniform and carrying sophisticated weapons’

Gurdaspur, Punjab: Sophisticated weapons and Chinese grenades were used by the terrorists who attacked passengers in a moving bus and stormed a police station, killing seven persons, including policemen, in Gurdaspur district on Tuesday, the Punjab Police chief said.

Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh said three terrorists were "eliminated" and as many policemen martyred in the gunbattle. "Three terrorists were killed while three of our men also died in the operation," he told reporters.

"They were in combat uniform and carrying sophisticated weapons, China-made grenades and GPS system. Further investigations are on," he said.

The DGP, who led the operation, said that, initially, efforts were made to catch the terrorists alive so that they could be interrogated later.

Asked why he wanted Punjab Police to lead the operation, he said, "Security forces always work jointly. We are thankful to LG K J Singh, GOC-in-C Army Western Command, Chandimandir who had offered assistance of army for this operation. But in this operation, we did not require the help of army. This operation was carried out by Punjab Police officials and jawans," he said.
