Dr Kalam worked on low-weight ortho calipers
Hyderabad: Nims director Dr L. Narendranath who worked very closely with Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam developed low-weight calipers using space age materials with the former President. “I had I spoken with him a month ago where he insisted that I address the Canadian Indian Foundation and explain about the prosthetic legs for polio-affected patients and amputees. I returned and only then spoke with him,” he said. “I never thought I would not be able to speak with him again.”
Dr Narendranath met with Dr Kalam at NIMS in 1993 where the first step to manufacture light weight calipers was made. The project of fitting the light weight callipers commenced about two years ago.
Dr Narendranath said, “Dr B.N. Prasad was the orthopedic surgeon and Dr Kalam wanted to know if light weight calipers can be made. Within six months details of callipers were collected and a brain storming session held.” Dr Prasad left Nims, and Dr Narendranath continued with the project.
