Sai is still in the hangover of Premam
Premam fame Sai Pallavi is totally surprised with the massive fan following
Some roles are so iconic that the characters become indistinguishable from the actors who play them on screen like the evergreen Clara of Thoovanathumbikal. After long comes another worthy contender. Sai Pallavi who acted in Premam is better known by her screen name ‘Malar’ than by her real name.
Studying medicine in far away Georgia when the film was released she was only aware of her massive fan following, courtesy her social page, but got to experience it first hand on her recent visit to Kerala. Much like the lines from her popular song Malare Ninne Kanaan…she had a long queue of admirers waiting to catch a glimpse of her.
At home in Coimbatore for her vacations, Sai is totally surprised and humbled by all the love showered on her. She exclaims, “Wherever I go in Kerala people call out ‘Malar’. I saw Premam four days back at a multiplex and in the lift was a man with a five year old child nestled in his arms; the child saw me and started singing Malare Ninne... that was so sweet!”
“I get the feeling that across all ages my character has been accepted by everyone and I am so happy Alphonse picked me to do the role. Sai recalls the first Malayali fan she met at Sharjah Airport, “He saw me and asked ‘Malar’?” and I replied aama and his expression was priceless. He did not smile but just held his chest and took two steps backwards and then wanted to take a snap, but his hand was shaking so badly that I thought his mobile would fall down. He had so much of love and respect that I actually cried; I immediately called up Alphonse to again thank him for giving me ‘Malar’. I did not act as ‘Malar’, I lived ‘Malar’!”
Through all this adulation, Sai is also worried about matching up to this once-in-a-life time role. She reveals, “I am not taking up any roles for now because it is going to take a while for Malar to fade away and people to accept me in any other role. I am enjoying this phase in my life.” Offers have been coming her way and she says that her criterion is that women be portrayed beautifully in the scripts she considers. She adds, “Women are strong and we can do more than just flaunt our bodies. Equal importance to the heroine is essential in my book and these days movies are giving importance to women-oriented roles.”
Sai has also found time for a social cause and she will be participating in the Walkathon on Cancer Awareness to be held in Kochi. She says, “If I am able to create awareness, I will be happy. I will also be at another event where a thousand students are being given medical insurance, since I am a doctor.” Being in her final year, she spends the rest of her time burning the midnight oil.
