Effortless but dressy: Designer Archana Rao
Every time we think denim is “so last season”, it claws its way back into our wardrobes and this time, it’s back with the denim-on-denim look. Sonakshi Sinha recently posted a photo of herself wearing a denim jacket over a denim shirt and denim shorts, saying it was her “#newobsession”. Prachi Desai was recently photographed at the Mumbai airport wearing a sleeveless denim shirt and jeans.
City-based designer Archana Rao says that, the ’90s-inspired style keeps returning, because it’s a simple way to be all dressed up without making too much of an effort. “Wearing denim-on-denim looks effortless, but still dressy,” she says, “It’s just a dressier take on the casual jeans look that people usually go for.”
But if you’re planning on trying the look on yourself, Archana says that there are a couple of things you’ll need to keep in mind. “Denim itself is such a strong statement, so you would want to go easy on accessories or you’ll overbear the look,” she warns, “If you’re doing denims, just keep it basic.”
The Indian climate also means you’ll need thinner denim shirts rather than thicker ones. “Shirt-weight denim is much lighter,” Archana says, “So you should team that with your regular thicker, pant denims. It’s a good solution for our Indian climate.”
Distressed jeans also lend a great look, Archana adds: “The more you wash it, the better it looks. I believe in the whole ‘buying one denim and keeping it forever’ principle because it just gets better with time (if you maintain your body size).”
