Let there be light

G. Shekar’s apartment in Banjara Hills is all about light, space and the colour white

When G. Shekar decided to move from his Srinagar Colony home to a Banjara Hills apartment, his son Bharadwaj who studies in the US wasn’t happy. But 15 days ago, when Bharadwaj reached home, his happiness knew no bounds. “After seeing the place he looked at me and said good decision,” says Shekar.

And we know why. The 3,095 sft apartment is everything that Shekar and family wanted. He lives in the apartment with his father Balaiah, mother Bharatamma, wife Jyothi, daughter Lavalika and son Bharadwaj. “I had three requirements, we should have natural light streaming in throughout the day, there should be good ventilation and it should have utility,” he says.

And to achieve it interior designer Rupana Reddy had to put a lot of thought into it. “The ceiling was low (8 feet) and there was no ventilation. So, we made way for natural light to come in by breaking walls and making space for windows. We chose the colour white, as it acts as a reflective material and enhances the space,” says Rupana.

But that was also Shekar’s wish. “I had to convince my wife Jyothi for the colour white. The maintenance isn’t easy but we decided that it will look good if we put in a little effort.”

There are a lot of materials used in their house. From a raisin acrylic material that resembles onyx to steel with galaxy theme for the puja room to a Corian partition.

“If we keep using onyx for every house, we will eventually run out of a natural resource. That’s why, we decided to go for materials like raisin acrylic that are an alternative to onyx,” says Rupana.
