Opposition returns, so does ruckus in Lok Sabha
New Delhi: After five days of suspension and boycott, the Opposition parties returned to the Lok Sabha on Monday, but the Congress MPs brought their placards and trooped into the Well of the House shouting slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan had allowed the leader of the Congress to make a brief statement on his adjournment motion, which was rejected.
With the Congress MPs in the Well of the House, Samajwadi chief Mulayam Singh Yadav abruptly rose to his feet and called on the Speaker to speak to the leaders of both the Congress and BJP and resolve the stalemate. Ms Mahajan, in turn, told him she could adjourn the House if Mr Yadav could assure her that the Opposition leaders would heed his advice.
Congress leaders were visibly taken aback, as party chief Sonia Gandhi was seen prompting her MPs to continue shouting slogans. Congress chief whip Jyotiraditya Scindia was seen rushing to Trinamool leader Saugata Roy, who apparently told him the stalemate had gone too far and Parliament should function now. The Congress MPs were seen requesting MPs of the SP, RJD and JD (U) to join in their protest, but without success.
