Potholes test citizens’ patience
Hyderabad: Though only half a month is left of the monsoon season, the city roads are yet to be black topped.
Sunday’s moderate rain exposed the pathetic condition of roads as potholes as wide as 1.5 metres stalled traffic at major junctions.
The state government has allocated Rs 21,000 crore towards the Strategic Road Development Plan, which includes flyovers, major corridor development, road widening and re-carpeting . However, the government is going ahead with its first phase of 20 flyovers with no word about blacktopping.
Residents say the GHMC can instead take up repairs on stretches not under phase 1. Many roads in Ameerpet, Tarnaka, Habsiguda, Dilsukhnagar, Ashoknagar, Musheerabad, Marredpally, Sainikpuri , Road no. 12 , Masab Tank , including the city flyovers, are damaged and riddled with potholes. The situation at the Golconda crossroads and RTC crossroads being particularly bad.
Terrance Murray, a resident of Ramnagar, said, “The stretch from Musheerabad to RTC crossroads road is the main road that connects Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Thousands of people travel by this road and hundreds of RTC buses ply on this road. The Hyderabad Metro Rail is also coming on this stretch. Despite this, no repair work is being carried out to fix the potholes.”
Road number 12 of Banjara Hills junction has 1.5-meter wide potholes at the four crossings.
“It is an uphill task travelling through this area. The road is full of potholes. It takes at least half-an-hour to travel the distance during rainy season. Normally, it would have taken us only about 12 to 15 minutes. Moving on the road becomes very difficult when it rains a lot. We want something to be done about this situation as soon as possible,” said Rukmini Reddy, a resident of Road number 12.
The main road from Radhika Junction to Neredmet crossroads, West and East Marredpally, Tarnaka to Moula Ali, Manikonda, Attapur are also damaged.
