It’s a fat shame, this
Celebs are voicing their angst against fans who don’t like how they look, or weigh
We don’t know when the body ideal became so frighteningly narrow, but the world seems to be descending on the overweight like a flock of weight hawks – something that celebrities aren't taking lightly to anymore. With everyone from Lady Gaga and Britney Spears to closer home, Sonakshi Sinha and Parineeti Chopra now giving body shaming the beating of its life with their bold gestures and creative retorts, we get the scoop on what namma Bengalureans think about the issue.
“It’s easy to hide behind a screen and take nasty jibes at people. For all you know, they aren't the epitome of perfection themselves,” says Seema Malhotra, the Bengaluru-based designer behind Kate Blanchet’s gown in Elizabeth and Judy Dench’s in Shakespeare in Love. She confesses that she herself has been at the receiving end of it. “I used to wear two petticoats to college to look curvier!” she laughs. “Although I’m all for being fit and eating healthy, it’s high time we fed into young minds that it’s important to be comfortable in your own skin,” says the designer who also takes into account plus-sized women while making clothes.
It’s no secret that some stars down South are curvy and their audiences like it. Take Parapancha star Ragini Dwivedi for instance. The actress has owned it and her fans love her for it.
Sandalwood actresses Rakshita Prem, Pooja Gandhi and Shubha Poonja have all been known to have gained a couple of kilos over the years. Recently, actress Neethu of Gaalipata fame broke down on the Kannada reality show Bigg Boss when her co-participant asked her to workout with him, taking a jibe on her weight. “Fitness is not about defending yourself to anyone, it reflects on how disciplined you are and as a result reflects on your success as well. And this isn’t just for celebrities, it holds good for everyone,” says actress Sanjjanna Galrani.
When Lady Gaga posted pictures of herself on social media, comments about how she should shave off a few pounds did the rounds. All that the singer had to say was, “So what if I got a belly sometimes, sometimes I don't. There’s people starving in the world. #whocares.” Body shaming is quickly catching up as a shocking channel of comic relief. Emma Stone has often been asked to ‘eat a sandwich’ and Kiera Knightley has often been accused of having an eating disorder – all because they are too thin. “This attitude is unhealthy, unfair and should stop now,” adds Seema.
