Dressing the independent woman

Designer Anand Kabra is making a runway comeback with practical designs

Designer Anand Kabra is returning to the runway after a sabbatical of two-and-a half years. He will be showcasing his designs at the Lakme Fashion Week, Winter Festive Season for the quintessential global woman with a mix of contemporary Indian twist.

“Nizami is something that my designs have come to be known about. But my designs are an expression of who I am. It’s a by-product of living in Hyderabad. The Hyderabadi influence percolates down to my work”.

Talking about the upcoming show, Anand says, “This is the first prêt show with couture-like detailing. The ease of wearing and practicality of my designs will be the highlight of this show. There is a lot of hand-painted designs as well. I was invited to the show quite late and hence all of it has been done in a hurry.”

Anand’s designs concentrate more on the craftsmanship and minute details. The outfits will be made of rich and luxurious fabrics of silk and chiffon. Anand says, “The inside matters a lot. The comfort of a dress reflects on the body language.”

Talking about his muse, he says that the independent woman who shoulders a lot of responsibilities and does not have a lot of time on her hands, yet wants to look her best, is the kind of woman he designs for.

“My designs are more emotion-centric and is a personalised narrative,” adds the designer. Anand feels that Indian fashion is going through a bad phase as there is a lot of influx of “wannabe” designers. “For those who are in this for the long haul, they will have to be original. Their works should reflect who they are and should not be mere copies. They have to be dedicated to their work to make a mark,” says a concerned Anand.
