‘Ill’uminating a cause
Some Bengalureans are gearing up to shave their heads in support of cancer patients next month
Bald is the new beautiful! Kudos to many youngsters from the city, who’re shedding all inhibitions and shaving their heads off to show their support for cancer patients next month as part of a cancer awareness campaign. With cancer on the rise, these men and women are shaving off their heads as a sign of solidarity to fight against cancer and acknowledge that bald is beautiful. We speak to few men and women on why they are shaving off their heads to support the cause and look chic.
“One need not go bald only because of cancer,” says Sushma S, a 27-year-old manager with a leading corporate firm in the city, adding, “A couple of my friends have cancer and one in the family too, so I thought why not pledge my support by doing this. I’m confident and really don’t care how I would look. I just want to show my support and this is the best way to show that I care.”
This 24-year-old radio jockey with Radio Indigo, Lester Dcouto who is also lending his support for the cause, isn’t just all talk - and the youngster is proving it. This young man is taking a stand against a worthy foe: cancer. Lester says, “I think more people should come and show their love.” He quips, adding, “I’m almost anyway getting bald, although I’m only 24. I guess it’s genetic or hereditary that I’ve started getting bald early. Earlier it would have probably been tough for me, but now that I’ve come to terms with losing my hair, I’m ok with shaving my head completely. I want to make people aware that there’s no need to have any reservations about it and if these social norms can help them in any way, then why not?”
Nithin Kamath, founder and 35-year-old CEO of Zerodha who is also going bald next week, is not apprehensive, as he states, “I have actually gone bald a few times. Although my family doesn’t like the idea of me going bald, this time my mom, dad and my wife were all happy, when they heard that I’m doing it for a cause. Earlier when I went bald, it was more of a fashion statement and my mother really freaked out as I had good hair.” Deepa Manjunath, a 30-year-old professional, agrees, “It’s my personal decision to shave my head off as I do not have cancer. When I put myself in the shoes of my friends who had to battle cancer, it’s really heartening and that’s why I’m quite proud of my decision.”
