High Court judges’ pension raised

The gross monthly salary of a High Court chief justice is Rs 2.10 lakh while that of a High Court judge is Rs 1.85 lakh

Kochi: The government has decided to increase the pension of retired judges. At present the judges who are not part of any commission are drawing an amount based on their tenure as High Court judges.

As per the new circular issued by the Registrar of Kerala High Court, the pension of retired chief justices will be increased by 10,000 and that of retired judges by 8,000. The amount would be disbursed directly from the High Court.

At present, the gross monthly salary of a High Court chief justice is Rs 2.10 lakh while that of a High Court judge is Rs 1.85 lakh.

Besides, each High Court judge gets benefits such as free government accommodation, an official vehicle, free electricity, leave travel allowance, medical reimbursement etc.

“The government has sanctioned Rs 10,000 per month and Rs 8,000 per month respectively to the retired chief justices and judges of the High Court of Kerala provided they are not entrusted with any government assignment,” the order said.

The post-retirement benefit with retrospective effect from May 23, 2013 will be disbursed on the basis of an undertaking, after deducting the amount already disbursed, if there is any.

The order issued by Mr Ashok Menon, Registrar- General also stated that the Registrar (Administration) High Court is authorised to sanction the claims of former chief justices/judges.

The last drawn salary of the judge would be fixed as the salary when a retired judge is appointed as the head of a commission.
