Chennai: In a first, an Indian article on ‘application of mobile phones in epilepsy care’, written by a team of five neuro physicians of Rajiv Gandhi government general hospital, has been chosen for the international journal Global Elsevier Atlas award for 2015. The article was chosen from among 2.50 lakh pieces.
According to R.Lakshmi Narasimhan, key researcher, the article talks about the prospect of mobile phone app in detecting seizures among the wearers and automatically sends alerts to care-givers and to their neurologists with exact GPS coordinates of the location in the patient.
“I really feel proud as this article has been chosen for the Elsevier Atlas award. This will encourage us to come up with more such articles,” said Dr. Lakshmi Narasimhan. Further explaining the usage of the app, he said “Continuous EEG monitoring is a system that can be incorporated in the mobile phones. So that an electrode is put by WiFi. It will continuously record the EEGs. Four hours prior to a seizure, different patterns appear which can predict the precision of seizure to 90 percent. Accordingly, the patient can take extra dose and avoid the seizure,” he said.
A.C. Somasundaram, a team member, said there are lots of apps some of which used by patients and some by doctors. Whenever such seizure happens to a patient it sends a message to the doctor, as doctor, family and patients are all connected through the app.
