Bengaluru: What was Chief Minister Siddaramaiah thinking! As India’s President and Prime Minister gave top billing to Teachers’ Day, our state leadership put both its feet in it.
Instead of September 5 - the day that Teachers' Day is celebrated across the country to mark the birth anniversary of former president and statesman Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan - the message that Mr Siddaramaiah put up on the official website of the Department of Information and Public Relations, where he wishes teachers on the occasion of Teachers' Day is dated 06-08-2015 (i.e. August 6, 2015).
Not only was Dr Radhakrishnan's birthday moved back by a month from September to August, he also moved it back by a day. The message should ideally be dated September 4 since this message was for teachers' on the eve of Teachers’ Day.
Worse still, after paying rich tribute to Dr Radhakrishnan, the CM’s message gives credit to Islamic State of Iraq and Syria militants, because they released four teachers - including two from Karnataka - whom they had kidnapped in Libya.
The abducted teachers were in fact released when some of the militants turned out to be their former students. But the statement says: “This incident sheds light on the sanctity of the profession. Another interesting aspect is that it was on Guru Poornima day that both teachers were released.”
Really, Mr CM! There are no good terrorists or bad terrorists. Just good teachers!
