Music with a shot of O2
Aditya Ashok from Ox7gen made a pitstop in Chennai as part of his five city tour to promote Recess, his new EP
For someone who consciously didn’t choose music as a career, this self-taught artist has been a pleasant surprise for music lovers. “Music just happened to me,” he said. While making a mark as a drummer, a bassist, an electronic music producer and a songwriter, Aditya Ashok now sleeps, eats and breathes music. Very literally though, since his music act has been aptly named Ox7gen, whose genre can be loosely described as ‘the myriad influences and various sonic experiments of Aditya’.
“It was the first time in 2008 that I heard the genre of electronic music, which is German-based. That kind of music influenced me and I started following several such similar bands. I started off playing with a psychedelic band called Rosemary,” said Aditya
Within just about two years, Aditya was featured at almost all the major music festivals, including the Sunburn at Goa, India’s Escape Festival, the NH7 Weekender, BASS Camp festival among many others. Not just that, he has also performed at the Glastonbury Festival in England with electro pop band Shaa’ir and Func and opened for American electronica artist Michal Menert and started off his solo act Ox7gen. “We also did supporting acts for London Elektricity, KOAN Sound, Alix Perez, Concord Dawn, Dub Phizix and Nymfo to name a few,” he added.
His recent sixth extended playlist (EP) Recess is a perfect blend of energetic and atmospheric music, suitable for dance floors and living rooms. “The new EP is an evolved sound and I’ve brought in influences of different music styles I was exposed to. Everything fell in place and I am very happy. It’s like a harmony between layers of rock music, vocals with liquid funk drum and bass,” he said. The song writing process however lasts from anywhere between four hours to four months sometimes. “I keep tweaking it, till I am satisfied with it.”
Having lived in Chennai for over five years in his childhood, he was quite nostalgic during his last gig. “I love the food here and I would always come back to the Chett-inad spread, which is my favourite,” he said. He will soon be off on a US and Canada tour, playing alongside Sktharbor, a progressive metal band among others.
