Breaking good
With celeb couples dealing with break-ups maturely, experts tell us how to go about it
Break-ups are hardly end-of-life situations these days. We know how to move on even after the bitterest heartbreaks. And our celebrities, too, seem to have grown up and are not spewing venom at one another constantly. For instance, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have a lot going on personally, but they have managed to handle it with a quiet dignity.
Closer home, Abhay Deol revealed that he’s still on good terms with his ex-girlfriend Preeti Desai despite a long, live-in relationship. Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan are civil about their separation while Katina Kaif does not let her earlier relationship with Salman Khan hamper her professional relationship with the star.
Life coach Milind Jadhav says, “When you break up with your partner you need to let go of any emotional attachment you have with him or her. Even if you don’t bump into that person socially, you will bump into them in your thoughts. When you let go of people, let go of the righteousness you carry in your mind as well. Real maturity is when you let go of the past and look at people with the eyes of the present.”
Despite having a very public break-up, Hrithik and Sussanne have handled it with maturity. Counselling psychologist Dr Diana Monteiro says, “You need to prepare yourself mentally. You have to accept that questions will be raised and it’s up to you how much you want to reveal. We call this the broken record technique, wherein your replies are
the same to everyone.”
However, Salman has not stopped himself from making some snide remarks at his former ladylove, to which Katrina chose to not react at all. So, how do you deal with such a tricky situation? Life coach Khyati Birla says, “You have to remind yourself that you broke up for a reason. When you realise that the same traits of your ex are being played out again, you know youdid good by breaking up.”
