Multiple farmers’ families struck by tragedy in Telangana
Hyderabad: Crop loss and indebtedness claimed the lives of six persons in the state on Thursday. Among the dead was the brother of a farmer who committed suicide, and the physically challenged sister of another farmer who had taken his life.
M. Srinu Naik, 24, of Sapavath tanda in Nagarjunasagar mandal, had borrowed Rs 2 lakh to dig borewells but they did not yield water. Distressed, he consumed pesticide near his field.
After his body was brought home, his sister Neela, who is physically challenged, took her own life. Srinu was taking care of her, after their parents passed away. Srinu had married six months ago.
In Warangal district. E. Agaiah, 65 of Ippalaguda in Narmetta mandal, committed suicide after his cotton crop failed and debts piled up.
In Nizamabad, K. Shivaiah, 53, of Basavanapalli in Tadwai mandal of Nizamabad district died of a heart attack.
He had returned from the funeral of his brother Ramulu who had committed suicide on Wednesday.
Agriculture labourer A. Shantanna, 40, of Ketepalli in Pangal mandal of Mahbubnagar district, was depressed at not finding jobs.
He died of a heart attack. In Nalgonda district, Meka Karunakar of Saduvelli, Yadadri mandal, hanged himself after his crops failed.
He had taken five acres of land on lease, said Yadadri sub-inspector Rajashekar Reddy. Family members said Karunakar had borrowed about Rs 8 lakh for irrigation.
In Ranga Reddy district, K. Ramakrishna of Surangal in Moinabad mandal committed suicide following a quarrel over debts with his wife, Moinabad SI Ravindra Nayak said.
Their children were staying with his in-laws as the family could not support them.
