Find out: What's the difference between Force Touch and 3D Touch?

Before the Apple hosted the launch event on September 9, the whole world was speculating Apple to integrate the Force Touch technology into the recently launched iPhones. Although it works on the same lines, Apple surprised all its fans by introducing 3D Touch in the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, instead of the Force Touch technology.

Since the event, Apple’s got everyone confused as to what really is the difference. Is it the same technology with a different moniker? Or is it a different technology altogether that Apple has introduced?

Basically, after Apple introduced the Force Touch technology in the Apple Watch and the latest MacBook, researchers and fans were expecting it to introduce it to the latest iPhones as well. Apple defines Force Touch as the ‘most significant new sensing capability’. Essentially, apart from scrolling, swiping and pinching, the Force Touch has a customisable feature, which allows a user to determine the pressure needed to register a click. The Force Touch can also tell if a user is clicking with a thumb or another finger and auto-adjust to sensitivity level.

The 3D Touch, on the other hand, is essentially taking the Force Touch one step ahead. The technology enables new gestures — peek and pop — so you can dip in and out of content without losing your place. Press lightly to peek at a photo, email, web page or other content, and press a little deeper to Pop into the content itself.

Therefore, Force Touch and 3D Touch are not entirely different, just that the latter provides the iPhones an additional level of sensitivity. Both Force Touch and 3D Touch are essentially based on the same technology and use Apple’s Taptic Engine.
