14 years later, US remembers the tragic events of 9/11 attacks

It was a black Tuesday for the United States of America. In a bloodiest attack on the US, on September 11, 2001, four passenger airliners were hijacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists and were flown into buildings across the US in suicide attacks. The world was shaken by the well-planned terror attacks executed with high precision.

High rises came crashing down like pack of cards and over 3000 lost their lives - everything happened in over three hours. Cleaning up of 1.8 million tons of debris at Ground Zero took few months and it officially ended on May 30, 2002.

Between 8.45 am and 9 am (EDT), two planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were flown straight into the World Trade Center in New York. While Flight 11 hit between 93-95 floors of the one of the twin towers, the Flight 175 crashed into 77-85 floors.

At 9.37 am EDT, American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon (the headquarters of the US defence department), damaging its western side.

In all, there were 19 hijackers, including Hani Hajour, who had a commercial pilot's licence.
