On a ‘Paw’sitive note
Whisk away to a musical weekend with enchanting beats and do your bit for a worthy cause
Every morning, Debadrita Jadav walks to a certain Kanakapura address. Nestled in the shelter of her Precious Paws Foundation are 47 rescued dogs. Through the day, this Bengaluru woman singlehandedly sources food, gives her canine companions their baths, plays with them and manages to squeeze in the odd rescue mission for stray dogs and abandoned pets.
Tonight, the city percussion group Beat Gurus will be performing in a unique fundraiser concert at the Indigo Live Music Bar, to support a rescue vehicle that would ply through JP Nagar and Kanakapura in aid of our furry friends.
Tipping the hat to man’s best friend, they call it the Big Bark Theory! “About four and half years ago, I lost both my dogs to illness when they were very young. It was a terrible blow and I began volunteering with rescue missions and visiting shelters. Upon seeing the dearth of shelters for strays, I started the Precious Paws Foundation and now it has 47 sets of precious paws. While we usually work with strays, we get our fair share of forsaken former pets as well. A few days ago we rescued a German Shepherd with skin issues, and yesterday there was a pregnant spit,” says the one woman behind it all, known popularly as ‘Debbie.’
With fundraisers like wall painting sessions and comedy nights drawing a niche crowd of pet parents, Debbie decided to organise a concert – something that would draw a real crowd.
“The trouble is that I do everything alone. I have many people calling me to ask where the shelter is, so that they can volunteer, and the minute I say that it is ‘Kanakapura’ they admit that it is too far from their homes. Yet, a pet shelter housing so many animals cannot be in the middle of a residential complex, can it?” says Debbie.
Pet-lovers and owners themselves, the Beat Gurus are excited to be pitching in for this particular cause. The African trance tribal music outfit’s member Ganesh says, “You know the universal cause of animals – it draws us all. Most of us in the band have dogs and are in love with these creatures. So it’s a real pleasure to be performing for the Big Bark Theory!”
