Xperia smartphones not meant for underwater use, says Sony
In a shocking turn of events, Xperia smartphones, that are widely popular for their dust and waterproof resistance, have been declared unfit for underwater use by Sony itself.
For all these years, Sony Xperia fanbase was almost entirely rooted on the fact that it was making smartphones with one of the highest possible Ingress Protection rating of IP68 for water resistance, which means that the smartphone is ‘protected against the effects of continued immersion’ in water at depths greater than 1 meter.

However, Sony recently updated its water and dust protection support page and according to its new policy it’s fine if you spill water on your Xperia device or get it wet in the rain, but it is not meant to be submerged underwater.
On the other hand, Sony has previously run campaigns and has advertised its smartphones by showing by people using the Xperia smartphones underwater, clearly indicating that the smartphones are fit to be used underwater. (Some of the smartphones have 'Aqua’ suffixed to their moniker for God’s sake!)
And now, Sony has changed its stance and come forward to say that “The IP rating of your device was achieved in laboratory conditions in standby mode, so you should not use the device underwater, such as taking pictures. Do not use the device to take photos while performing any type of activity underwater, including diving or snorkeling.”
