Telangana, Andhra Pradesh fare badly in school attendance
Hyderabad: Over eight lakh children between age six and 14 in Telangana state are not schooling while Andhra Pradesh has 10 lakh such children, as per the recently released Census 2011 data. These is startling, also as the Right to Education Act has made education compulsory for children of this age-group.
Interestingly, of the 8 lakh out-of-school children in TS, about 2.22 lakh are drop-outs, while the remaining 5.81 lakh kids could never step into a school.
A whopping 3.27 lakh. AP children had dropped out while the remaining 7.21 lakh kids never made it to school. The drop-out rate among girls was also higher in both the states.
About 51 per cent of children dropping out of school were girls in TS while the corresponding figure in AP was 52 per cent.
Interestingly, in TS, places like Hyderabad, Rangareddy and Mahbubnagar account for the maximum number of out-of- school children. Hyderabad revenue district alone has more than 1 lakh children who do not go to school.
Rangareddy and Mahbubnagar districts have about 12 lakh and 14 lakh such children. Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari said the educational infrastructure in the state has been completely destroyed over the past decade due to the policies and actions of the previous governments.
