Kushboo stirs up hornet’s nest again
When I was in Mumbai, nobody taught me rationalism, says Kushboo
Kushboo, known for making controversial statements, is at it again! The All India Congress party spokesperson was the chief guest at a function organised in the city to celebrate Dravidar Kazhagam leader EV Ramasamy’s (fondly addressed as Periyar) 137th birthday recently. Speaking at the event, the actress-turned-politician said, “I came to Chennai 29 years ago on September 13. If you ask me now, I consider this moment of attending Periyar’s birthday function as a cherished moment and addressing this huge gathering as the biggest achievement, because I became a rationalist after getting attracted to his rational thoughts.”
Reiterating Periyar’s message of ‘self respect’ for women she said, “It is a woman’s choice whether or not to wear the mangalsutra (thaali). Though I was born elsewhere, my thoughts have always been occupied by the rationalist ideas of Periyar.” Calling herself as Periyarist she said, “I think that’s the reason I have the guts to say what I feel is correct.” One may recall that Kushboo has also acted as Periyar’s wife Maniammai in the biopic titled Periyar, which had Sathyaraj reprising the role of the leader.
She added, “When I was in Mumbai, nobody taught me rationalism. I don’t believe in caste, creed, race and religion. I believe sixth sense helps me to think and act and that has been given by my parents and not by God. Hence they are my Gods.”
