Hyderabad: Ashoorkhana’s ledge collapses
The structure was built in 1594 and is listed as a protected monument
Hyderabad: A 20-feet portion of a 100-feet chajja (ledge) of the heritage Badshahi Ashoorkhana near Madina Circle, Hyderabad, collapsed on Friday evening due to heavy rains. The structure was built in 1594 and is listed as a protected monument.
Hereditary caretaker Mir Abass Ali Moosvi, said, “The Badshahi Ashoorkhana was built along with the Charminar. It is one of the prized monuments of Hyderabad. In 2012, repair works were carried out but the balcony was not restored.”
The Ashoorkhana has many visitors on Thursdays and Fridays but since the slab fell at 3 pm, no one was injured.
Archaeology department director Sunita Bhagwat, who visited the Ashoorkhana on Saturday evening, said, “A part of the extension roof collapsed. We are evaluating the situation.” She has asked officials to start restoration from Sunday.
An Archaeology and Museums department official said, “The structures around the Ashoorkhana are dilapidated. We were restoring them one by one but till now the main structure was not taken up. It did not seem to need urgent attention. It is 400 years old and due to water seepage it must have got weakened. We will restore that too.”
Majlis-e-Ittehadul Mu-slimeen MLC Syed Altaf Razvi urged archaeology officials to renovate the Badshahi Ashoor-khana as its inner roof is dilapidated.
