Mahbubabad declared gudumba-free

The police department also got support from the Telangana Jagruthi

Warangal: What was once a hub of illicit liquor has now become completely free of that Mahbubabad DSP Nagaraju has announced that the police has successfully cleared the sub-division of gudumba.

“It took us about nine months. Numerous counselling sessions, extensive awareness programmes and rallies gave us result. We did this following the Gandhian way of not booking cases or threatening anyone and by making sure that villagers are made aware about the need to eliminate this evil. I am happy that Mahabubabad sub-division is the first to become gudumba-free in Telan-gana,” he said. 166 villages, 716 hamlets and 53 villages on the outskirts of Mahabubabad mandal are now free of gudumba. Earlier, this business used to be a cash cow to the tribals of the area. About 1/6th of families in each hamlet used to brew illegal liquor. There are at least 30 per cent widows in each hamlet in this division. The average age of a person dying due to consumption of adulterated liquor is 30.

The police department also got support from the Telangana Jagruthi and the Rotary Club who also did their part in creating awareness. DSP Nagaraju has sent out a strict warning to anyone trying to sell illicit liquor in the region. "We will not spare anyone who tries to bring ID liquor back to. Production of illegal liquor or sale of black jaggery will attract cases under PD Act."
