Sanitizers have thyroid link
With exposure to the chemical increasing, there is a strong possibility of side-effects over a prolonged period of time
Hyderabad: Households are now using a lot of cleansers, sanitizers and other cleaning agents that are available in the market.
While earlier there was one product through which people were exposed to triclosan, there are many more now.
With exposure to the chemical is increasing, there is a possibility of side-effects over a prolonged period of time, say doctors.
Senior pharmacologist Dr Sai Kumar said, “We do not have a system of reporting an Adverse Drug Reaction despite setting up of committees.
Hence, these cases go unnoticed when people come with small reactions like burning sensations in their hands and legs.
Also, thyroid problems, which is now so rampant in women, requires to be seriously examined, whether these household products have any role to play.” Existing clinical data shows that three out of every 100 women visiting hospitals suffer from thyroid problems.
Endocrine specialist Dr Geeta Naidu said, “There is a strong need to have a consolidated targeted study on these issues to understand how household and personal care products affect the body. This will give a clear insight and make people opt for safer alternatives.”
