Seven of family die as car falls in Guntur canal
GUNTUR: Sitting in a the dickey of a small car saved the life of a woman in Saturday’s mishap near Phirangipuram in Guntur district, which claimed the lives of seven of her family members. With the seven family members sharing the front and rear seats, Moghal Ashabi, 60, squeezed herself into the dickey space of the Maruti Alto. In heavy rain, the driver apparently missed the road and drove straight into the Guntur branch canal.
The vehicle nosedived into the canal, but the rear of the car, where Ms Ashabi was sitting, was above the water.The lone survivor Ms Ashabi’s husband Moghal Babu is an RMP specialist in the treatment of piles. Her two sons-in-laws, who died in the accident, were also RMP specialists in the treatment of piles. Ms Ashabi’s husband was not available for a comment.
Mr Sk. Mastan Vali, a resident of Siringipalem village, saw the car falling into the canal and rushed in to help. At first, he managed to pull Ms Ashabi out to safety. When she informed him that the rest of her family was in the car, he called the 108 service for help and went back to the vehicle. But it was too late by then for the seven others. With the help of passers-by, they brought out the bodies of the victims.
Mr Mastan Vali said he was returning home from his field when he saw the car falling into the river. The other victims were Ms Ashabi’s two daughters and three grandchildren.
