THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Congress party revamp in the state to be held after the local body elections will not be based on group loyalties, but on the merit of the candidates.
This is as per the wish of party vice-president Rahul Gandhi who has prevented the plans of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala to share the posts on 50:50 basis.
They had stalled the move by PCC chief V. M. Sudheeran to reorganise the party before the local polls, but it will not be a smooth sail for the two leaders either.
Sources said the AICC had received several complaints from most districts after Mr Chandy and Mr Chennithala had begun seat-sharing among the ‘A’ and ‘I’ factions in mandalam and block-level committees.
“Mr. Gandhi rejected this move. After completing the mandalam and block-level committee elections, Sudheeran brought in seven more people in the Wayanad DCC which upset the other two leaders,” said a KPCC general secretary.
The AICC knew that the revamp would have caused setback to the party in the local body polls. On Tuesday, the three leaders will attend the Kasargod and Kannur Congress conventions.
Meanwhile, the ‘A’ group now wants to show the door to Mr Joy Thomas, president of Consumerfed, who has been supported by Mr Chennithala.
Mr Sudheeran had also shot off a letter to Mr Chandy and Mr Chennithala to oust him.
