With insurance cover, banks not serious on security steps
Two robberies within a month in Kasargod exposed their failure to adhere to the norms despite warnings by the police
KOZHIKODE: Burglars increasingly target banks when they refuse to follow the guidelines on basic security.
Two robberies within a month in Kasargod exposed their failure to adhere to the norms despite warnings by the police.
Many of them, even the nationalised ones, do not have basic security systems like CCTV cameras, alarms or well-trained guards.
"Banks take it for granted, and nobody bothers about a possible burglary or robbery as they lose nothing even if something happens," said Prem Nath, a bank employee.
"The surveillance cameras of many banks are not functioning. And where they work, it only helps post-mortem of a crime as no bank has an alarm system".
So the maximum security at most of the banks is just a couple of armed guards. In the Vijaya Bank burglary, police found no damage caused to the strong-room lockers, indicating that the thieves had used duplicate keys or the safety lockers were not locked at all.
"Police cannot prevent such crimes if the bank authorities continue to be dismissive of security arrangements. In Kudlu robbery also, we had highlighted the absolute lack of security. But no banks are listening," Kasargod SP Dr A. Srinivas said.
When banks are working overtime to ensure online security for the internet and mobile transactions, they do not care about the conventional security. "Bank gets back the money stolen as they are insured and an employee is never held responsible," said Vinod Kumar, manager of a nationalised bank.
"So bank managements are not interested in improving security. We have advanced systems that can alert them even when a locker is opened without prior permission. But nobody is interested in instaling such systems."
