Student cadets to make citizens IT-savvy

The cadets would then train the local people
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a bid to take digital literacy to the grassroots levels through students, the Kerala State IT Mission has tied up with student police cadets to impart training to the citizens.
About 10,000 people would be trained in the first phase which will be launched by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday.
As many as 100 tablet computers will be supplied to ten schools and the student police cadets of these schools will be trained by Tata Consultancy Services.
The cadets would then train the local people. The duration of the first phase is three months and thereafter, the tablet computers will be handed over to other schools, IT Mission director Mohammed Safirulla said.
“Our objective is to spread digital literacy to citizens through the 40,000- odd student police cadets across the state and thereby bridge the digital divide,” Mr. Safirulla said.
The training will focus on seven different modules of national digital literacy mission, which include introduction to digital devices, internet, e-mail, social media, getting information through internet, government services through internet, e-commerce and security.
The tablet computer worth Rs 10,000 is loaded with Android-based digital literacy software developed by IT Mission through Keltron.
The programme would be a continuing process of giving training through fresh cadets every year.
