Airport staff braces for October 22
Over 100 flights likely at Vijayawada airport during foundation laying
Hyderabad/Vijayawada/Rajahmundry: Vijayawada airport officials are bracing up to accommodate a large number of aircraft that are expected to arrive for the Amaravati foundation day on October 22. Though the airport has set a record by operating 52 flights in 16 hours on the eve of Mr Chandrababu Naidu's swearing-in as Chief Minister in 2014, airport authorities are now into brainstorming with the help of experts to accommodate more flights.
Airport officials estimate that there would be more than 100 flight movements during the three-day foundation laying ceremony. Officials are working on providing parking for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Air India One as well as other flights carrying VVIPs without disturbing normal passenger traffic and also adhering to security protocol. The Gannavaram airport can accommodate two ATRs and four commercial aircraft.
Vijayawada airport director A. Raja Kishore said, “The PM and five CMs are coming for the ceremony as per information given to us. There is no problem for the PM’s flight landing. Apart from these, VIP flights and commercial operations will be operational on the day.” Rajahmundry airport authorities are making arrangements to accommodate small aircraft. The 1,700-metre Rajahmundry airport runway can operate ATRs and equivalent aircraft. Authorities say that they can re-position the helicopter apron to facilitate parking of four to five small aircraft.
