Modi compares Punjab CM to Mandela, gets trolled on Twitter

'Badal Sahab is the Nelson Mandela of India', the Prime Minister had tweeted
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is the the second-most followed world leader on the micro-blogging site Twitter, has provided fresh fodder to internet trolls with a tweet he posted on the site on Sunday.
Narendra Modi in his controversial tweet compared Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to anti-apartheid revolutionary Nelson Mandela for spending years in jail.

However, the 'political reasons' due to which Mr Badal was in jail were very different. The former Punjab Chief Minister along with his wife and son was first booked in 2003 under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The case dragged on for years after which all the accused were acquitted by a court due to lack of evidence.

In April this year, Badal was in the news again following a teenage girl's death after she was raped and thrown out of a moving bus. Investigations into the case showed that the bus was owned by a company called Orbit Aviation, which Badal has a stake in. The CM struck a compromise with the victim's family by paying them Rs 30 lakhs in cash which was dubbed as "blood money" by the opposition.

The Badal family also had to face a lot of embarassment after strong allegations surfaced against Bikram Singh Majithia, the brother in law of Sukhbir Singh Badal, for his involvement of in the import of harmful drugs in Punjab.

Needless to say that Parkash Singh Badal has courted enough controversy for people to launch a scathing attack on the Prime Minister for comparing Badal to South Africa's hero Nelson Mandela. Within hours, the hashtag #YoBadalSoMandela became a top trend on twitter as scores of twitterati took to trolling the Prime Minister for his tweet.
