Femme ‘WIll’ of ‘tal’ent
This Irani artist, who has relocated to our city will showcase her works on female farmers in India
She’s as beautiful as her creations. Tala Afshin was inclined towards the canvas and colours from an early age. An artist from Iran, she moved to India as she fell in love with its festive fervour and vibrant nature. Tala has to her credit many group and solo shows. Today, she creates stunning, even inspiring canvases meant to trigger emotions and memories and will be showcasing her next exhibition in the city on the hardworking female farmer’s community. We speak to the professionally trained artist on her artistic bent and what she plans next.
“I started painting when I was a child. I liked playing with colours in different media. Earlier whatever would come to my hand, I would create something with it. That’s when my mother realised that I was creative and encouraged me to paint. I soon realised that colours and painting were the most important tools for me to express myself,” says Tala.
She gave into her calling and decided to learn to paint formally. “I started to learn to paint in high school itself in applied art and followed it up with an advanced diploma from Iran. My sister was studying in Bengaluru and I came here and loved the Indian culture, especially all the bright hues really inspired me and I decided to stay here and join a college to further my art. I did a bachelors degree from the University of Mysore and a masters from the Lalithakala Academy (SALA) KSOU University, Mysore. I’m completing my PhD in ancient archeology from the University of Mysore this year.”
She has showcased her works at various art exhibitions in the city. After a group show at Mashhad city, Iran, she had a show in Whitefield in Bengaluru which garnered a good response. She also held shows in Mysore and at five star hotels, prominent galleries and at the Chitrakala Parishath in Bengaluru. “But the best show that I will always cherish will be the International art exhibition and an art camp in Vizag. I was invited to be a part of the 10-day camp and my paintings were exhibited in the museum. It was great knowing and meeting different artists from different cultures from across the world.”
Tala likes to paint human abstracts in colour as well as black and white and is now working closely on issues related to women and their freedom to showcase her art concept. “I was trying to understand women by living in a Muslim area in Mysore with Muslim women for a month. Then I went to Ooty and lived there for three weeks and spent my time with some hardworking women farmers’ community. I also read a lot of books and met professors who have researched about them and only then I felt I was ready to paint my next project on them. I’m also making a documentary on these women. My next exhibition will be held in Iran followed by another one in Dubai. And then I will have a big show in Bengaluru. My other passions include interior designing, playing squash, dancing, zumba and travelling.”
