Soubin Shahir is about to take a break from acting

He has been around for 13 years as an assistant director, but became more well known as an actor. Soubin Shahir, noted for his comic roles in Premam, Chandrettan Evideya and Annayum Rasoolum, is now all set to wear the hat of a filmmaker.
Soubin, who is currently acting in Vipin Das’ Mudhugavu, says: “Earlier, I had a plan to do a film with Fahadh Faasil. But now I have zeroed in on another subject and have decided to do it first. It will be a light-hearted subject and the screenplay is written by me along with a friend.
“As of now, I have not confirmed the actors. Anyway, the film will start rolling in February or March,” says Soubin, who will take a break from acting once he completes the committed projects and concentrate on his directorial venture.
So, how did he end up being an actor? “I didn’t even dream to be an actor. It was owing to the pressure from my friends did I venture into this field. I liked the roles which came to me. But, I think this is the apt time to step in to the role of filmmaker,” says Soubin, who has assisted film makers Fazil, Siddique, Rafi Mecartin and Santhosh Sivan.
Soubin has a bunch of movies in his kitty including Khalid Rahman’s Anuraga Karikkinvellam, Mudhugavu, Jijo Antony’s Darwinte Parinamam, Dileesh Pothen’s Maheshinte Prathikaram, Lal’s King Liar and Rajeev Ravi’s untitled film.
“The novelty of the roles attracted me to all these films and that is why I became part of these projects even amid the pre-production of my own film. In Mudhugavu, I am doing a role of ‘serial killer’, who ‘operates’ from the capital city. This is for the first time I am doing such a role. I cannot reveal more about my character,” says Soubin.
The actor, who is popular for rendering ‘Ernakulam slang’, is now all set to deliver dialogues in ‘Idukki’ accent, which is completely new in his career. “In Maheshinte Prathikaram, I am going to speak in Idukki slang. My character’s name is Crispin, who has studied photoshop. He is a naughty person, who works in a studio as designer,” says Soubin.
